Why people ask for the Wrangler specifically
It's the one rental that isn't a crossover. Part-time 4WD with a real transfer case, high ground clearance and short overhangs make it genuinely confident on plowed mountain roads and steep resort lots. In summer, the front roof panels lift out for open-air scenic drives around Coeur d'Alene and up the Selkirks.
On-road use only
The Wrangler is capable, but our rental terms prohibit off-road driving and towing — no trails, no rock crawling, no river crossings, no unmaintained two-track. Maintained public and forest service roads are fine. Off-road use voids coverage and is billed for any resulting damage.
What it's like to live with
It rides firmer and runs louder on the freeway than a crossover, and fuel economy is the price of the hardware. Cargo space behind the rear seat is modest. If your trip is mostly interstate miles with luggage, a Subaru or a three-row SUV is the better tool — the Wrangler earns its keep once the pavement gets interesting.
Winter
Real 4WD plus 3-peak mountain snowflake tires satisfies Washington's traction requirements and handles snowy resort access about as well as anything in the fleet. It still won't help you stop faster than physics allows.
Common Questions
Can I take the top or doors off?
The two front roof panels can be removed — we'll show you how at delivery. The doors and the rest of the roof must stay on at all times. Please reinstall the panels if weather moves in; interior water damage is billable.
Can I take it to Canada?
Yes. There's no cross-border surcharge, and registration and insurance documents live in the glovebox. See our Canada guide for what to bring to the border.
Is it good for a ski trip?
Very. Add a Yakima ski rack as an extra at checkout and your skis or boards ride up top on the roof rack, which keeps the whole cargo area free for luggage. Nearly every SUV in our fleet can take one — just select it when you book.
